'Hornet' is a modified version of the Van de Stadt designed Sea Mini. Built in 2004 by her present owner, she is the epoxy built round bilged design with lead ballast keel and Canadian cedar core. Instead of the 6.50M hull length, 'Hornet' is 7.00M which allowed her owner to install a counter hung rudder and install an inward sloping transom.
Built as a capable offshore racing boat, she is great fun to sail whilst offering safety to those on board. Deck stepped spars by Z-Spars, standing rigging certified until 2028, decent sails and a fully braked RM, 4K30 twin axled trailer.

Mechanical

Vessel is powered by a Suzuki DF4, 4-stroke outboard. The engine sits in a central well in the cockpit sole and thrusts directly against the counter hung rudder. This is a pull start version requiring no battery power. There are two storage lockers built port and starboard, with ample space for the two fuel tanks provided.

12/240V systems on board with 12V selector switches built into a brushed stainless panel. There is one for port and one for starboard with a built in monitor for each battery. The batteries are not onboard and will either need recharging or replacing. Sterling 40Amp battery charger and shore power unit.

Rigging

'Hornet' has a Bermudan sloop sail plan with 3/4 fractional rig. Deck stepped aluminium spars by Z-Spars with twin sets of spreaders. Roller furling headsail gear and slab reefing mainsail. The mainsail has 3-reefing points and has a protective sail-kote and lazy jack lines.
The standing rigging was replaced in 2018 and she has had little use since the Covid year of 2021. The mast is unstepped and the running rigging is stored under cover.
This is a true single handed sailor with all lines led aft to the cockpit.

Accommodation

As you would expect from this style of boat, the interior fit out is fairly spartan. It was all about the performance rather than the comfort. That said the interior is finished to a high standard and is clean. The berth cushions are well upholstered and covered in durable fabrics. The floor panels are maple and hard wearing. There is a single gas burner mounted on a gimballed bracket. This is the same model that was used by Ellen MacArthur on her Trimaran solo circumnavigation. There is 12V lighting throughout and an opening deck hatch for ventilation.

Construction

Composite built round bilged sailing yacht with lead ballast keel and stainless steel bolts. Counter hung rudder with marine grade aluminium stock and solid iroko tiller. This is a self build boat which was laid up by her present owner in 2004. Her hull is epoxy and woven roving cloth with a Canadian cedar core. The hull is 30mm thick but immensely strong. Hull topsides are painted in International yellow paint with black stripes, hence the name 'Hornet'
Self bailing cockpit with iroko sole and iroko locker tops. Epoxy and woven roving cloth decks finished in grey deck paint and 'trakmark' panels. Curved superstructure finished in white paint for contrast. Stainless steel stem head fitting bow roller. Stainless steel bow and stern rails joined by stainless steel stanchions and double set of guardwires.
