Construction

Grand Soleil 37, built by Grand Soleil (Cantiere Del Pardo) in 1997 to a design by J&J Design.

White GRP hull and non-slip decks. NPG isothalic gelcoat for durability and waterproofing. Hull laid up by hand with 17 layers of glass fibre alternating with 18 coats of orthophthalic resin. 4 longitudinal ribs and 13 transverse ribs. Bulkheads bonded to hull 60mm of lamination.

The deck is reinforced with balsa sandwich for good shear strength, longevity, thermal and acoustic insulation.

Hull/Deck joint is bonded with special adhesive, 520 stainless steel rivets covered with 2 layers of mat and gelcoat and finally the toerail is fixed with 180 stainless steel fixings, resulting in a robust and waterproof joint.

Lead fin keel (2.05m). The keel is bolted with 10 number 24mm bolts and 1 of 10mm and then bonded with epoxy resin.

Spade rudder. Rudder shaft is 60mm diameter stainless steel with 12mm thick stainless steel integral fixing plates. The shaft rotates on two supports 1 metre apart, with a self aligning ball-bearing system which reduces friction to a minimum.

Chainplates are made of 12mm stainless steel and are attached to the hull by 18mm stainless steel tie rods these in turn are secured with 8 x 10mm diameter bolts to a stainless steel fixing plate on the main rib which supports the mast base.
